The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
