Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
